How to design a dealer and contractor loyalty program that works

In paints, electricals, plumbing, cement and auto parts, the person who recommends the product often matters more than the person who pays for it. The painter picks the putty. The electrician picks the switches. A channel loyalty program rewards these people for choosing you, and tells you who they are.

Decide who you are rewarding

Programs struggle when they try to serve everyone with one set of rules. Retailers, contractors and end customers want different things. Start with the group that influences the most purchases in your category, and design for them first.

Pick the earning trigger

  • A QR code on the pack. The most common choice for contractors. Each pack carries a unique code, and the member scans it to earn. It is quick, and it tells you which product was used where.
  • Invoice upload. Suits retailers and dealers buying in bulk. The member uploads a bill, and your team or the system verifies it.
  • Purchase records. If your distributor management system already records retailer purchases, points can be credited automatically.

Set a point value you can afford

Fix the value of one point in rupees, and set the reward budget as a share of the sales the program drives. Write down what happens if participation doubles. A program that has to cut point values in its second year loses members’ trust quickly.

Use tiers to reward consistency

Tiers such as silver, gold and platinum give members a reason to keep scanning after the first reward. Base tiers on points earned over a rolling period, and make the benefits visible: higher multipliers, faster redemption, invitations to trade meets.

Make redemption simple

Most contractors prefer cash. UPI or bank transfers through a payout partner are simple to run and easy to understand. Gift catalogues work for some audiences but add logistics. Whatever you choose, keep the minimum redemption low enough that a new member reaches it in the first few weeks.

Rewards to business partners can attract tax deduction above certain limits. Build TDS into the payout process from the start, and ask your tax advisor how it applies to your program.

Plan for fraud from day one

  • Make every code single-use and link it to a batch.
  • Flag many scans from one phone or one location in a short time.
  • Verify ID and bank details before high-value redemptions.
  • Watch for codes scanned far from where the batch was shipped.

Speak your members’ language

An app in English alone leaves out many contractors and small retailers. Offer Hindi and the regional languages of your markets, send confirmations on WhatsApp, and keep the screens simple enough for a budget phone.

Measure what the program returns

Track active members, scans per member, redemption rate and the cost of each point earned. Compare sales in areas with high participation against areas with low participation. These numbers tell you whether to raise rewards, change the earning rules or put more effort into onboarding.
